Cravats

Why are some things fashionable?  Why do others go out of style?  It’s a mysterious thing.  We start out wearing certain clothes because we think they’re awesome, and then ten or twenty years down the line they’re either ugly or a necessary part of everyone’s outfit and no longer as cool as they used to be.
Mostly I’m talking about the tie.  The tie has been around a very long time.  And the idea of wearing cloth tied around your neck in an interesting manner has been around a lot longer.  It was called a cravat.  There used to be dozens of ways to tie a cravat, each one with its own style and unique nature.
But like most fashions it couldn’t last forever.  The cravat was ousted by a long straight strip of cloth that hangs to your belly button.
So inspiring.
To show:
This is a tie: (and a very ugly suit)

 And this is a cravat:

As you can see, Cravats are entirely cooler than ties.  But somehow the tie has become as necessary as socks and about as inspiring.  Why are we still using it?  It doesn’t look all that great, and the only reason that it’s still standard business attire is because we somehow think a tie makes things more formal.  I beg to differ.  A man wearing a vest is formal.

A man wearing a tie looks like he’s doing the least amount of work possible in order to scrape by.

A man in a cravat and a vest?

Dynomite.
Bring back the cravat, I say!
